Chapter One

Hello my fellow classmate,

Below I will be talking about three interesting things that I found in chapter one. I will be talking about health in the United States, improving health behaviors, and lastly what you can do to promote health equity.

According to the textbook “ American infants born today will live to an average age of 78 years, much longer than the 47- year life expectancy for people born in the early 1900s.” This statistic makes me appreciate living in today’s society even more. To think that more than 100 years ago your life expectancy was below 50 is absolutely appalling. Through our enhancement in medicine and technology we will be able to live past 80. We should not take this for granted.

In chapter one it talks about various ways we could improve our health behaviour. The one suggestion that I found fascinating is to sign a contract declaring a change of behavior. According to the textbook, the contract is a “functions as a promise to yourself, a public declaration of intent, an organized plan that lays out start and end dates and daily actions.” I really like the idea of this contract. An individual will be motivated in being the best version of themselves. It will serve as a reinforcement to live a healthier lifestyle.

Lastly, chapter one talks about ways you can promote health equity. My favorite suggestion is enjoying the benefits of diversity. The textbook states that “ building relationships with those who are different can expose you to new ideas, as well as new foods, new sports, new music, new authors.” Being surrounded by people who are different than you will allow you to think outside the box. Being with people who are parallel to you will not give you the opportunity enhance your lifestyle.
